Empowering Change with Motivational Interviewing

Empowering Change with Motivational Interviewing

Presented by
Joe Simmons

The path from awareness to action often includes ambivalence, or “stuckness,” a normal part of the change process. Explore and experience some communication strategies to partner with clients to resolve ambivalence by eliciting and strengthening their own motivation for change in a spirit of empathy and compassion.

The workshop offers a taste of Motivational Interviewing (MI), a person-centered, evidence-based communication style, widely used by helping professionals, including coaches.

MI’s communication style and non-confrontational approach aligns with ICF Core Competencies. It is also effective with members of marginalized communities who may have experienced negative relationships with previous providers. Come explore how MI can help you partner effectively with clients who are stuck and get a taste of some of its skills in fun and supportive ways.

Learning Objectives

Participants who complete the workshop will be able to:

  • Describe the role of ambivalence in the change process and how to support clients in resolving it.
  • Differentiate between directing, following, and guiding in helping relationships.
  • Define the characteristics of the Spirit of MI: compassion, acceptance, partnership, and empowerment, and how they affect coaching conversations.
  • Apply selected Motivational Interviewing micro-skills in brief exercises.
